蒋廷黻日记>19631103

Sunny, windy (NW) and cold. Practiced one round only.
C. M. Chang 【張純明], at delegation meeting last Saturday, stated his thesis that the split between Peiping and Moscow was a split between two ideological factions, like the split between Stalin and Trotsky. I disagreed. Of course, it is, in one aspect, a factional split, but only in one aspect. Involved in the earlier split was the rivalry between Stalin and Trotsky for the leadership of the Soviet Union; now, it is a rivalry between Mao 【毛澤東] and Khrushchev for leadership of the world communist movement, and with the issue of leadership is the issue of China or Russia. Mao, according to my judgment, would be satisfied with a sphere of influence in Asia, without disputing the U.S.S.R.’s sphere in the West, but Khrushchev would not have a rival leader in Mao or China, or a rival empire. If Mao should die, Khrushchev would not concede more to Mao’s successor.
The conflict between Peiping and Moscow is like the one between Rome and Byzantium.
