Finished reading Eric Chou 【周榆瑞],【1】 A Man Must Choose. The main story is his imprisonment and investigation, conducted by the Reds as thought reform, reveals nothing new. After subjecting him to 4-year imprisonment and with it much harsh treatment, the Reds, according to the story, were convinced enough of his reform to let him return to Hong Kong and to undertake new confidential work: there must be something wrong.
The book confirms the importance of hierarchy among the Reds and with differences of ranks there are all sorts of difference in food and housing. It also comprises the general poverty.

【1】周榆瑞（1917-1980），英文名Eric Chou，福建閩侯人，北平師範大學英國文學系畢業。
抗戰期間曾先後於桂林與重慶任職英國新聞處、美國戰時情報局，戰後任《大公報》記者，1949年後任職香港《大公報》。
1953-1956年在中國遭逮捕入獄，1957年返回香港，1961年後定居英國，1965年後任臺灣《聯合報》駐倫敦特派員。
1963年出版英文著作《徬徨與抉擇》（A Man Must Choose）。
