Evening, Huang Shao-ku 【黃少谷], his wife, and son, and Kiang Yi-seng 【江易生] and wife, came to dinner. The boy is a strong big fellow, studying in military school.
Huang and I talked about the fighting in India. We agreed on the following points: (1) The offer of cease-fire by the Reds is not a military trick. They will withdraw 20 km behind the McMahon line; on this point, they have satisfied the Indian demands. In other sectors of the frontier, their proposals are not clear. (2) The Reds have found the price high for their successes, likely to be higher in the future. With American aid and British to India, the attrition could be hard for them. Now, their withdrawal is coupled with military glory and propaganda glamour. Later, it could be coupled with disaster. (3) Nehru will work for a compromise. (4) The Reds will probably continue their pressure on Britain, Sikkim, and Nepal.
As to causes of the rift between Moscow and Peiping, our talk did not get far.
