At 10:30 a.m., John Mitchell, introduced by Paul C. Meng 【孟治], came to consult me about his future. He had taken courses in Berkeley in Chinese language and history and wondered whether he should not change to political science or sociology. Told him I could not help him in the matter as I did not know him. As to Chinese history, it was a right field, but it was very exacting. Taiwan could not provide him with fellowship. He must find financial aid in the U.S.A.
Liu Chieh 【劉鍇] and Hsueh Yu-chi 【薛毓麒] came from New York. We went into conference about interview with Harlan Cleveland on Chinese representation. I had listed the questions which the Ministry wished us to raise. We went over the list one by one.
At 4, we saw Harlan in State Dept. Liu Chieh showed himself an experienced negotiator.
At 8, gave a dinner in honor of a group from Congo-Leopoldville,【1】 President of the Senate Victor Koumoriko, Vice President Dieumi, and Secretary-General Bukasa, and Charge d’Affairs Cardoso and his wife. Koumoriko kept coating during dinner. Because of his illness, he is forced to give up trip to Taiwan.
