Saw Dr. Newman, the optometrist, and got a new pair of glasses: $63.00, terribly expensive.
Cleared my desk of papers.
Took Hilda 【沈恩欽] to lunch.
Golf practice.
Attended cocktails and dinner given by Suzanne Hsia 【周叔蘅], broker in the firm of Bache & Co., to meet the top men of the firm. Bache himself seemed modest, cultured, and reasonably keen. Wise, director of research, was the intellectual. We chatted in a corner, he asking questions about the mainland. He thought significant my statement that “the Chinese soldier is a peasant in uniform.” Hall was recently in Hong Kong, to open a branch. Hulun, the immediate boss of Suzanne, is self-made; served in the navy. He could stand some polishing; could resist Irene’s charms.
Left restaurant at 10:30 p.m.
