Kiang Chiping 【江季平] and wife accompanied us to Friendship Airport in Baltimore (10 minutes from the city). The plane, DC-8 of United Airlines, took off promptly at 12 noon. At Chicago, it had to circle around for 20 minutes before it could get clearance from the tower. Hilda 【沈恩欽] became ill.
We left Chicago at 1:35 p.m. (Chicago time). Blue skies greeted us most of the way. Hilda enjoyed the quiet-like fields, the mountain slopes and tops, the rivers, which she said looked exactly like those on the maps.
At 3:35 p.m. (San Francisco time), we arrived at Frisco. The Consul-General and the Museum people, the Chinatown elders, and Mr. 【楊雲竹] and Mrs. Yang met us. We went to the Fairmont Hotel; then to Chinatown, to sign the register.【1】
At 5:15, we attended the reception given by Consul-General 【孫碧奇] and Mrs. Sun in Fairmont banquet room. Met many old friends: Y. R. Chao 【趙元任], C. M. 【李卓敏], C. H. Li 【李卓皓], S. T. Tung 【董時進], Yu, Chang Chia-ngau 【張嘉璈], etc.
Dinner with T. A. Soong 【宋子安], the most suave of the Soong brothers. Mrs. Soong is a beauty and a charming hostess. Had one rubber of bridge.
