Talked with Kiang Yi-seng 【江易生] about Hu Shih 【胡適], in connection with my article. Pointed out to him that Hu Shih had three choices: (1) opposition, (2) non co-operation, and (3) co-operation, with right of independent criticism on specific points of policy. He chose the last course, as much as the government could expect; the only course consistent with his nature.
Anna 【陳香梅] brought Gov. Noe and wife, and 2 others to Twin Oaks for tea. The governor is certainly a lovely character.
Attended a reception in Turkish Embassy. Met there Mr. and Mrs. Loy Henderson,【1】 friends of Moscow, ’36-’37. Loy said that when Sun Fo 【孫科] arrived in Moscow as Special Ambassador, he shut himself in, refusing to see anybody, not even the Americans. Sun seemed to think that in this way, he would win favor with the Russians. Loy thought Sun’s mission in itself was hopeless.
