Col. John Glenn【1】 successfully went into orbit and circled around the earth three times, taking four hours and 50 minutes. The Soviet monopoly on space travel is broken.
Called on the Colombian Ambassador, Dr. Carlos Sanz de Santamaria.【2】 He told me that his government held huge areas of uncultivated land; if peasants wanted land, the government could grant it free. He felt that the wave of communism had passed its crest.
Called on the Haitian Ambassador, Dr. Louis Mars:【3】 a man learned in philosophy and law. The first president of his country was murdered by the landlords, because he favored giving the land to the peasants.
Col. James McHugh【4】 came to call. He was U.S.A. naval attaché during the Chungking period, very well acquainted with conditions on the mainland. Now retired. Hinted he would be glad to serve U.S.A. Ambassador to Taipei.
Dinner with the Berckemeyers of Peru; met there Senator and Mrs. Cooper and Congressman Mailliard【5】 and his wife. (Calif., San Francisco).
