Called on Uruguayan Ambassador Carlos Clulow.【1】 He had a long period of service in Bonn: admired its progress, was not sure that the Germans would or would not turn to militarism.
Lunched with Joseph Alsop in the Metropolitan Club. With a sharp mind and marvelous memory for facts, he quizzed me and answered my questions with the utmost economy of words. He thought the rift between Peiping and Moscow serious; might result in a formal break; wait and see: March will have the Central Committee meeting, probably a showdown. Called his attention to Peiping-Moscow cooperation in Cuba and Africa and S. E. Asia. He said, even so, the rift is serious. He would venture an opinion on the general trend of events, as there were too many unknown factors.
Called on Amb. Haikal【2】 of Jordan. He thought the economic measures of Nasser were communist; Nasser would someday openly declare himself a Marxist-Leninist, as Castro has done.
