Gladys failed to come to the office. I was angry, because arrangements for tomorrow night’s dinner were delayed thereby.
A Chinatown paper speculated that Huang Shao-ku 【黃少谷] was to be Secretary-General of the party and I was to be the new Foreign Minister. It is a baseless speculation.
Evening, attended a testimonial dinner in honor of Eban. The Jews know how to manage publicity and how to fight and work together. Commager,【1】 the historian, and Tom Dewey produced grandiloquence without shame. Dixon kept within bounds. U Thant【2】 of Burma said something substantial. Mrs. Roosevelt made her goodness and sweetness count.
The Geneva Conference squabbled over round or square tables and where to rest the West and East Germans. James Reston of the New York Times calls “These questions momentous trivialities.”

1952年曾任緬甸出席聯合國大會副代表，1957-1961年任常駐聯合國代表，1961-1971年為聯合國秘書長。
