蒋廷黻日记>19581002
Cheng Hsi-ling 【鄭錫霖] showed me two papers published in Chinatown, which editorially criticized me for my speech in the U.N. One, a KMT paper, said I was wrong in putting the off-shore islands problem at the end of my speech instead of at the beginning. The other, an opposition paper, was especially vicious. The editorial was entitled: “T. F. T. 【蔣廷黻] is Stupid.” It felt I had business to tell the world that the revolt on the mainland could not be created from the outside. Both are stupid outpourings. It is people like these writers who make the conduct of foreign policy difficult.
Afternoon, went on the BBC program Radio Link 4:15-5 p.m. (London 9:15-10 p.m.) Four newsmen, one in Paris, one in Ottawa, on in Washington, and one in London, interviewed me over the phone. I found the men were genuinely trying to make the issues clear to the public. There was no attempt at smartness or at cornering me. The time allowed, full 45 minutes, was ample for a full discussion.
