Hilda 【沈恩欽] and I started for Boston at 10:25, with Norman Dobbins driving. Cloudy. Traffic not too crowded. We went by Merritt Parkway, U.S. 15, 20, and 9. Had luncheon near Sturbridge. In Brookline, had no difficulty in locating Sze Pao’s 【蔣居仁] apartment at 1440 Beacon St. He was waiting for us, worrying, since we did not arrive until 4:20 p.m. We noticed he had a nice little apartment in a nice location, arranged in a bachelor’s way. We went to the Motor Hotel at 1200 Beacon. At 5:30, we went to Claire’s home and took up all the presents. Claire had a good time unwrapping them.
Claire has two brothers, Charles and Jimmy, and two sisters, one married and one not. Her parents are both living. They are all honest, good-hearted, very bourgeois in both Chinese and American senses. They served tea and cakes. Then they served cocktails. We all went to the church to rehearse the ceremony. The pastor is a nice kindly man. At 8, we went to Pacific Restaurant in Chinatown, finishing at 9:30.
Sze Pao drove us back to the Motor Hotel. At 00, he went back.
The Motor Hotel is noisy and hot. But I slept.
Chiping 【江季平] phoned that there would be a Security Council meeting at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
