Beautiful day, cool at 58°.
Started writing an article for the China Weekly of Hong Kong, with the aim of stressing democracy and industrialization, the two keys of the future.
Harold Riegelman came to luncheon. He talked about Israel and the Arabs, and said that he found the Arabs determined to destroy Israel. Told him that in fact the establishment did not injure the national interests of Egypt or Syria or any other Arab state, and that the future of every Arab lay in modernization and not in destruction of Israel. The world must appeal to the rational being in the Arab, who unfortunately for the time being was all emotion. He also talked about a new decoration; I assured him that George 【葉公超] would present him with a new and higher one. He talked about being made legal counsel to all Chinese agencies in the U.S.A. Told him that was impossible. I had reached the limit of my patience and courtesy. Fortunately, he did not put forth fresh claims. We finished the meeting in a friendly spirit.
Practiced golf.
Worked on the garden. The two air-wrapped branches turned out to be no good.
