Morning, office. Writing an article for Free China 【自由中國] on “Experts and Diplomacy,” an appeal to study communist mainland carefully and thoroughly, so as to furnish authentic information to the world and to be internationally accepted and respected as final authority on Communist China.
Lunch with Paul C. Smith,【1】 Editor-in-chief, and Kenneth McArdle, Executive Editor, of Collier’s: Shen Chang-huan 【沈昌煥] and N. C. Nyi 【倪源卿] were the other guests. Shen answered Smith’s questions very well. For example, he said that in the last two years, the Communists have become stronger militarily but weaker economically, military strength being derived from Soviet equipment and planes. He emphasized Communist road and railway building. Talk lasted two hours.

【1】Paul C. Smith（1908-1976），曾任《舊金山紀事報》財經記者、總編輯、主編與總經理。
1953辭職後，嘗試整頓Crowell-Collier旗下包括《科利爾》（Collier’s）在內的三份雜誌未果；1956年底結束雜誌營運，隔年辭去董事長與總裁職務。
後曾任美國出口航運公司（American Export Lines）副總與財務長。
