Hot. Roy Howard phoned to tell me that after consulting with his friends, one of whom military, he suggested that Sun’s 【孫立人] case should be separated from that of Kuo Ting-liang 【郭廷亮]. I told him that it was impossible because Sun Li-jen in his letter of resignation had mentioned Kuo. Roy thought the letter was forced, or at least involuntary; in any case might be edited. Then he said his military friend was distressed. The Pentagon had not decided to give aid in training reserves, on account of defects in military system, particularly the political commissariat system. The Sun case could create further difficulties. Roy said that of course the U.S.A. would not interfere, that the U.S.A. would live up to treaty obligations, but that China needed an entente cordiale with the U.S.A. on top of the Treaty of Mutual Defense. The Sun case, he said would injure the cordiality.
Cabled George 【葉公超].
Several phones from Koo 【顧維鈞] about the Sun case (when Taipei would release the news) and about his and Chang-huan’s 【沈昌煥] coming.
