Mr. Yip 【葉良才] met me on the train and took me to Dupont Plaza, where I had breakfast with Dean Hutchison, Hu Shih 【胡適], Yip, and Tsien Sze-liang 【錢思亮].
At 10, board meeting began with Hutchison in chair. The financiers discussed investment policy. Ho Pao-hsu 【霍寶樹] favored selling common stock for preferred, i.e., lower income but higher security. MacKay, Isaacs,【1】 Lee Kan 【李榦], and Brodie opposed.
In connection with the director’s report, I pointed out that the miserable pay in the university and colleges of Taiwan prevented them from securing the success of promising young men; not only that, but even from keeping the better teachers.
Luncheon in the Embassy.
Took the 3:30 p.m. plane, arrived in LaGuardia at 4:40.
Hot and humid in both Washington and New York.
