Delegation meeting.
C. M. Chen 【陳之邁] told me that he was asked to go back to Formosa for the purpose of acting as liaison officer during the visit of Nixon.
Met Lovestone at luncheon. He gave me the AFL 【美國勞工聯合會] publications on “Admission of Red China to the U.N.” Also told me that Churchill was really very ill, pictures not withstanding.
H. P. Tseng 【曾虛白?] came to chat. Told him that there was no demand for nationalization in the U.S.A., that Republicans wished to prevent more TVAs 【田納西河谷管理局] while Democrats might try to do more, that, as regards social security, there was no difference between the two parties, that in England, even Labor, with the exception of Aneurin Bevan, did not demand more nationalization. Tseng thought that when industry was nationalized there was no need for trade unions. I said no. I pointed out to him that with us the great decisive fact that nationalized enterprises often suffered from over-staffing, inefficiency, etc. and that in this way, we killed the goose that laid the eggs.
Ben Kizer【1】 from Washington called. He was prominent in IPR 【太平洋學會], served as first UNRRA 【聯合國善後救濟總署] representative in China, and upon return spoke for the Communists. He came to “pay respects,” paid me a compliment for my part in S.C. on Monday. We both avoided politics.
