蒋廷黻日记>19530126
Asked members of the staff to offer criticisms of the draft speech. C. L. Hsia 【夏晉麟] made some valuable suggestions in language. S. S. Liu 【劉師舜] thought the part on the Near East and North Africa might offend France and Great Britain. N. S. Cheng 【鄭寶南] thought the paragraph on Hainan might be omitted, which I decided to do.
Lunch with Jay Lovestone and Etter. I asked Etter to describe conditions of labor. He criticized low wages, child labor, and bad housing for copper miners, coal miners, fishermen, salt workers; he thought textile and railway workers better off. The U. of Formosa did not teach labor relations at all. I made some suggestions. Etter strongly supported an invitation to Chen Cheng 【陳誠]. As regards U.S. Ambassador to China, I mentioned Grady【1】 and Wedemeyer.
Hu Shih 【胡適], back from Taiwan, phoned. He wished to raise money to microfilm some rare books now on the island.
