Trygve Lie back. U.N. Secretariat, like a paid claque, staged a welcome demonstration. Moral depravity is universal; one despairs of democracy. He held a long press conference during which he managed very adroitly to say nothing. He is a would-be Chamberlain,【1】 enjoying a minor measure of popularity, such as greeted C. after Munich. In years to come, he will be forgotten, or remembered as a good-intentioned fool. At Moscow, he saw the Commy Ambassador, on whom he urged (1)
participation in the work of the specialized agencies, and (2)
better management of relations with Great Britain. On his way back, he told his story to Bevin, who showed his gratitude by making a speech in the House of Commons.
Invited Kohlberg to lunch. He told me that Barmine【2】 had told him that Lattimore and Barnes belonged to the directing bureau of Comintern for the Far East. He wanted me to meet McCarthy, which I refused. I urged him to place his material at the disposal of a trained historian for a book. He was only partially convinced, thinking scholars to be fools—citing the example of Kerner of California, who in the Commonwealth Club stood for no aid to China. He was very hard on Roosevelt.
Met Sunde at Gross’ cocktail. Urged me, at the request of Lie, to attend dinner of Lie in honor of Cadogan.
