Sent a cable home, asking for instructions as to (1) timing of the next meeting of the Interim Committee, and (2) whether question of observation group should be pressed in the Security Council. Received a cable re contact with Dulles.
Roland 【林咸讓] came for a long talk. Gave him a lecture on difficulties of reform, trying to dissuade him for dealing in vague generalities and indulging in emotional attitudes. He needs fresh air and maybe a psychoanalyst. He wants me to issue a press statement on his leaving the delegation. It is a dismissal on the ground of retrenchment. He wants it given out as resignation on the ground of desire to change field of activity. Very tedious.
Evening, burned all unnecessary papers, before moving to another apartment. Three hours of burning in the huge fireplace.
唐培經,【1】 Tsing Hua colleague, came for a chat. He wanted to know my general outlook in regard to the future and my advice to young people to return to China or not.

【1】唐培經（1903-1988），數學家，生於江蘇。
1927年東南大學理學士畢業後，1929-1934年任清華大學教員。
後赴英國倫敦大學留學，1937年得統計學博士學位，並膺選為英國皇家統計學會會員。
後曾任中央大學教授、教育部高等教育司司長。
1949-1951年任愛荷華州立學院教授，1951年起擔任聯合國糧農組織顧問，先後駐巴拿馬、厄瓜多與秘魯，後任拉丁美洲區域農業統計顧問。
1967年調美國華府與美國農業部代表主持合辦的國際普查訓練班，1969年退休。
