Beautiful day. Hu Shih 【胡適], P. C. Chang 【張彭春], Franklin Ho 【何廉], H. C. Kiang 【江季平(鴻治)], Hsia 【夏晉麟], Hsu 【徐淑希], and myself met in a conference on the Institute of Pacific Relations. Agreed to withdraw. Had lunch together. Franklin, having recently looked over the files of the Independent Critic 【獨立評論], talked interestingly about the people who wrote for it. Hu Shih remarked that his faith in the Chinese character that 1,400 articles were written for the journal without compensation. I recalled the personality of V. K. Ting 【丁文江], and acknowledged that the journal did more for me than for anybody else.
Afternoon, saw Muniz of Brazil, for the address of Aranha, who ventured to advocate admission of the Chinese Communists. Intend to write Aranha a letter of protest.
Noyes of U.S. delegation came to chat about the two draft resolutions which James Yu 【于焌吉] had been circulating. He felt that they were beyond the competency of the Interim Committee. I explained my viewpoint but did not try to argue, for in fact he had some very good reasons.
