The Herald Tribune, the Times, and the Daily News all came out with strong editorials condemning Trygve Lie’s stand. They also carried a small quotation from Koo’s 【顧維鈞] statement.
Amb. Chang 【張勉] of Korea came to chat. Invited him, Consul-General Namkoong 【南宮炎],【1】 and H. C. Kiang 【江季平(鴻治)
] to lunch in Old China.
Gross came at 3 p.m. I read to him a paragraph from Hamilton’s dispatch in the Times to the effect that many delegates believed that Acheson favored admission of the Commies to the U.N. Gross reacted immediately: the U.S.A. did not encourage or discourage others; the mere fact of a statement that the U.S.A. did not favor admission of the Commies must have some effect; the U.S.A. linked non-admission with non-recognition, thus taking up a position opposite to Lie’s thesis. He thought the U.S.A. should tell the world why early peace talks were futile; Acheson was going to make a speech to that effect, he had seen a draft but found it not good. Public opinion would not understand U.S.A. reluctance to engage in talks about atomic energy unless explained. Trygve Lie had in mind to solve the question of Chinese representation within a few weeks and then hold a special session of Security Council in May. Gross was also of the opinion that Lie’s moves had not had any practical effect.
