Kiang 【江季平] came to tell me that he had a good talk with T. V. 【宋子文], who said he must help me in settling my divorce problem. There was also some talk that he might take up the Security Council while I return to be Minister of Foreign Affairs. Lunch with Koo 【顧維鈞], Hu Shih 【胡適] the chief guest. Koo used all his eloquence to persuade Hu to take up the premiership, stressing the time factor. Hu was obdurate. I asked to name alternatives. Hu mentioned Wang Shih-chieh 【王世杰], myself, Yu Ta-wei 【俞大維], Chiang Monlin 【蔣夢麟]. I remarked, “You are talking against your conscience.” Later, I added that the possible alternates would be glad to serve under him. He remained obdurate. Koo talked about Kan 【甘介侯], who saw Marshall twice, once in Koo’s presence, and once alone. Koo also mentioned a good talk with Johnson. We were together for 2 ½ hours. Besides exchanging information, we achieved nothing. I came away both tired and disappointed.
