Sunny and cool, Office in the morning. More jobseekers.
Took Sze Pao 【蔣居仁] and H. 【沈恩欽] to Jones Beach. Played golf.
As soon as we arrived at the golf grounds, the attendant said there was a telephone for me. On the way, at 1 p.m., heard over the radio that Egypt had attacked. I was then afraid there might be a special session of S.C. When the phone was connected, Mrs. Moy told me S.C. at 3. Got Dr. C. L. Hsia 【夏晉麟] to attend. Nevertheless, the shadow of war was dark. I can’t find a way out. China, it seems, must urge the Arabs to seek a solution in peace. That is the only role consistent with China’s position and interests.
Evening, dinner at Lie’s, in the house of Gromyko. Besides S.C. members, Wallace and O’Dwyer.【1】
