Morning, office. Dai Poe-liu 【戴葆鎏] came to thank me for nominating him to the U.N. Lunch in Town Club, invited by Jessup, in honor of the governors of the States. Was at the same table as Gov. Robins【1】 of Idaho and his wife. She is a quiet house-wifely woman, who wished her husband to leave politics. He is a surgeon by profession, very intelligent, quite keen on world affairs.
Wire and long distance phone from T. K. 【張紫常] that Hilda 【沈恩欽] has arrived early in the morning and would leave immediately for New York. At 9, phoned to United Airlines—found that the plane was 1 hour and 20 minutes. Nervous, because yesterday a DC-6 met with disaster. At 10, phoned again; the same reply. Played cards with Sze Pao 【蔣居仁]. As soon as he fell asleep, started for LaGuardia field. Walked by seashore for 40 minutes; was still ½ hour early. Sauntered about. At 12:20, somebody told me the plane had landed. It took a long time to get to gate 8. There was Hilda. We had a hearty kiss and then a sweet ride. Hereafter we must stick together. One long night of love.
