Lunch with Henry Luce, to meet Charles Stillman,【1】 who is going to China in connection with the aid program, to look over projects of economic program, amounting to $60,000,000. Told Stillman, (1) to meet and talk with the Chen brothers without prejudice, (2) to tell C. 【蔣中正] that the U.S.A. did have prejudices against China but that one of the ways to overcome them was a wise administration of the aid program, (3) a tripartite—Chinese government, Chinese private capital, and American private—arrangement for future economic development should be tried. Promised to wire in advance for him.
Afternoon, in apartment, resting, thinking about the speech, and playing with Donald 【蔣居仁]. At 6, took him to the corner drug store to buy sandwiches and ice cream for his supper. Then I went to the Essex House, to meet with the Manhattan chapter of Reserve Officers. Spoke for half an hour on “Russia in 1917 and China in 1948.” Informal, enjoyed myself. Back at 10. Found Donald still awaiting. Had an orange together, and he went to sleep.
