Had breakfast at 11. N. S. 【鄭寶南] and Ann, Sze 【蔣居仁], and I, we four started for Long Island at 12. First, Valley Stream Park—a simple picnic ground. Second, Hempstead Park—again, only picnic ground; although there is a lake, no boats were available. Sze Pao grumbled at the prospect of a mere walk in the woods. After some thought, he suggested Jones Beach. There we had a game of golf. For some reason—wind probably—we all did badly. Sze Pao’s score dropped from 75 to 85; mine from 85 to 98. But it was good exercise.
Back at 6. Fu Sze-nien 【傅斯年] came at 6:20. We chatted about U.S. aid to China; Churchill; the Communists; Palestine; Kashmir, etc. Both praised Toynbee, he having finished Civilization on Trial, I in the midst.
Against the sunny background of the country in Spring is the shadow of N. Z. 【唐玉瑞], which darkened my outlook during many moments the whole day.
