Lopez of Colombia said he did not like Trygve Lie’s handling of the problems and therefore voted for Arce. Santa Cruz【1】 of Chile said he did favor one of the Big Five taking the Presidency. The Arabs explained that Latin America sent them an ultimatum that a vote for me would alienate their support, etc. As a matter of fact, it was a combination of Arab and Latin American forces, with the U.S.A. taking the lead, which defeated me. Lopez nominated me for the First Committee, which I got by 40 votes, the largest majority cast today. Afternoon, balloting. I left at 4 to take a nap at home. Sze Pao 【蔣居仁] came at 6. Went to Lake Success after supper: Palestine truce: after a session lasting from 9:15 to 2:15, the resolution was passed by 9 to 2, the U.S.S.R. and Ukraine abstaining.
The funny thing was, Gromyko raised a question about shrines and sanctuaries which took a ½ hour to clear up.
