Beautiful spring day. Morning Security Council on Palestine. Since the U.S. delegation was not ready to introduce its resolution, nobody wished to speak. I almost adjourned the session. Finally, Canada came out with a statement, giving the U.S.A. mild support. France followed, very wobbling. The Jewish Agency read a declaration, which had already been given to the press, that the Jews would set up a government on May 16th.
Afternoon, took Sze Pao 【蔣居仁] to the Palisades for a ride and a walk. It is one of the most beautiful sights in the world. And a walk among trees and shrubs is the most pleasant. I wished that Hilda 【沈恩欽] were there. Some day I must take her there.
Back in the house at 6.
Evening, played rummy with Gerry, An-shih 【鄭安世], and Sze Pao.
Early this morning, N. Z. 【唐玉瑞] called. Her voice reminded me of the misery of the past and of the misery to come. It cast a shadow over my whole morning. During the Security Council, my mind refused to admit Palestine in; it was brooding over life’s miseries.
