Dr. Silver【1】 made a very skillful and moving statement on behalf of the Jewish agency. But at bottom, his reasoning was unsound. At 6:30, India gave a reception in Waldorf-Astoria: very impressive. The more I know the Indians—first of all—Mrs. Pandit, the more I like them.
Evening, a long talk with Wang Shih-chieh 【王世杰]. He hoped that Bullitt 【蒲立德] might be appointed U.S. Ambassador in place of Stuart 【司徒雷登]; or Henry Luce. Told him both these men are known to be very pro-Chinese. They might meet with considerable opposition from the very beginning. Gov. Edison, as pro-Chinese as Luce or Bullitt, might be better because not so partisan.
