Beautiful sunny day. Committee of the Far East met at 13 Portland Place. Lehman read a report on activities in the Far East, refused to add any oral comments. Kizer related sections of his report for oral delivery: am afraid few understood what he said, as he condensed so much. I was glad to see John Carter Vincent 【范宣德] among those present. In the afternoon, visited Kew Gardens: magnificent. Evening, long chat with C. M. Li 【李卓敏] and Liang-fu Chen 【陳良輔] about China’s industrialization. Chen said that the contract with Westinghouse 【西屋公司] would put on the market in China such vast quantities of electric supplies that unless other lines of development should catch up, we would have to seek foreign markets. He also said that planners of YVT 【YVA揚子江水利工程計畫] thought that the power might be used to manufacture artificial fertilizers which might be exported to the United States! The State Department has frowned on the project.
