Hot, 93°. Sister and her husband and their two children, Ting-kia 【蔣廷甲] (cousin)
and his wife and a child, Ting-hsun (cousin)
and his two children: came for lunch, the first family reunion I have attempted. Although close in blood, we are far apart in hearts and ideas, and therefore, the reunion gave us no pleasure.
The 3-ton vegetable seeds that Sie Kia-sheng 【謝家聲] got from UNRRA 【聯合國善後救濟總署] turned out to be a big joke. And Harry Price 【畢範理] wishes me to invest more money in them, in the form of buying back from the farmers more seeds next year.
The medical training program is another joke. To train 300 in a short course will cost Ch$300,000,000: double NHA’s 【衛生署] present year budget. It has engendered so much ill-feeing.
Powers rushes off to see P. Z. King 【金寶善] about cholera: P. Z. in a moment of weakness consented to ask for 7 doctors and 2 sanitary engineers from the U.S.A., when the medical personnel on hand suffer from lack of motor transportation. A little expenditure on the spot could go so far. Instead of providing this little expenditure, people rush off to get more Americans into China.
Instead of saying anything concrete about the 1944 program, Kizer insists on having the job done all over again. The 1945 program turns out to be a minor revision of 1944 program: all love’s labor lost.
This damn thing is idiotic.
