Kwong 【鄺自修], the Vice-consul, took me to the airfield at 3:30 a.m., where we waited till 7:15, being told that the regular plane, DC-3, was out of order and another was being tested for substitution. It turned out to be a transport with bucket seats. It was cold but very soon became comfortable. Stopped at Madras 【馬德拉斯(清奈)] for lunch. Both during the journey and at lunch, the English companions kept religiously silent, in contrast to the rowdy friendliness on American Army transports. At 4:30, arrived at Colombo 【可倫坡]. General Feng 【馮衍],【1】 our liaison officer with Mountbatten,【2】 Consul Young 【楊冕煌],【3】 and Kao, leader of local Chinese community, met me at the port. Feng took me to one hotel, could not get a room, and then being told at the Air Booking Office that a room had been reserved for me at another hotel by the sea side, we went and checked in. Had a shower bath, a rest, and a complete change of clothes to suit the tropical heat. Tradesmen’s stands are full of bananas, a delight to Sze Pao 【蔣居仁]. Streets are wide and well-paved; if taxation here can support such streets, we ought to be able to do it in China. This is the tropics, with sweat running all the time, with evening comes coolness. Dinner with Consul Young, a young man brought here from Manchester, who talks pleasantly about war-time England. Borrowed from him a Manchester Guardian Weekly, one month old.
