In the morning, considered carefully the memo left with me last night by Kizer and Johnson, on the functions of his office, and wrote down my criticisms which I intend to present to them tomorrow. Later, considered the memo on training of personnel, left by Y. S. Chang 【章元善]. To my surprise, I found it entirely academic. Then Victor Shen 【沈惟泰]【1】 called: he was in the foreign office before the war, and then joined Kao Tsung-wu 【高宗武] and Tao Hsi-sheng 【陶希聖],【2】 stayed in the French Settlement for 5 years, escaped last summer, taught in Amoy University, and arrived in Chungking recently. Offered him a job, which he accepted. Hope to make him my personal secretary. Lunch with Chu Chia-hua 【朱家驊]: met there Shen Yi 【沈怡],【3】 new Vice Minister of Communications. After half an hour of rest, went to the office. Talked over the housing problem with Hu 【胡可時]. Went with him to see a residence in Kialing Village: was delighted with it. Told Hu to buy it from the Party. Tried to draft a paper of resignation and of recommendation of a successor as Director of Political Affairs 【行政院政務處長]. Went to see Teng 【鄧介松]【4】 in Executive Yuan, but found him ill. 李樹青, the land economist, came to chat. We discussed “the New Age of Enlightenment.” Evening, he and C. C. Wu 【吳景超] came to supper and play bridge. Had afterwards some talk with Shih Chi-nan 【施其南]: San Pao’s 【蔣懷仁] going to the U.S.A., etc.
