Ho Hao-ao 【何浩若?] telephoned in the morning, telling me he had every right to the house and I had none. I told him I had in my hands the title deed, certified by the comptroller’s office. At one p.m., he telephoned again, apologizing for his high-handedness and asking me to yield. I told him I would send a man with documentary proof to see him. At 3 p.m., his man brought documents to see me: they were exchanges of letters between him and the owner, bargaining but settling nothing. I told his man that those documents of his settled nothing, established no right, and that I would so inform the American authorities, feeling sure that they would respect the Chinese law in regard to this matter. The man begged me not to do it, as it would make his office lose face. I could not, I told him, yield my rights. Hsieh Cheng-fu 【謝徵孚] came with the Organic Statute of CNRRA 【行政院善後救濟總署], as passed by the Legislative Yuan; it contained only one important change: reduced number of associate directors from 5 to 2. I felt much relieved. Had a long talk with 石【志仁], the former Director of Kwangsi-Hunan Railway: offered him the post as head of my Bureau of Supplies. He hesitated. Evening, in P. H. Chang’s 【張平群] home. T. V. 【宋子文] vetoes my taking Kao Ling-pei 【高凌百?] with me to Sydney.
