V. announced that he had caused the commissioner of public works in Chungking removed on account of using stones far away instead of what is nearby. Everybody applauded. In connection with a project for building light railways in Shensi, Chen Cheng 【陳誠] said that in the case of a former road construction job, $30,000,000 had been paid by National Treasury but the laborers on the road received not a cent; this time, I felt that the cost could be greatly reduced and the laborers should receive their wages. The remarks were well-received by the cabinet: fresh air in a stuffy room. Evening, dinner with 端木鑄秋【愷] and 陳克文; most guests were former associates of the Executive Yuan. Very jolly.
