蒋廷黻日记>19450106
Received a letter from Da Pao 【蔣智仁], telling me that her fountain pen and lipstick had been stolen from her box in the dormitory. While talking about this, N. Z. 【唐玉瑞] told me that her beau, when speaking about her, had used coarse language. I wrote her a letter, telling her to be cautious in these matters. Received a package from my Washington office; sent a reply to H. C. Chang 【張鴻鈞] about welfare activities and his return. Wrote a letter to H. C. Zen 【任鴻雋] on the Ch$165,000,000 from UCR 【美國援華聯合會]. Afternoon, in returning to the office, found that our dormitories for lower staff had been burned and that many had been rendered roofless. Lyman Hoover【1】 brought 江文漢 to see me about student relief. My servant came to borrow Ch$50,000 to start in business. Had to tell him that I was living on selling things.
Evening, 丁巽甫 came to play bridge.
Bought two pounds of Klim at Ch$1,900 each.
