蒋廷黻日记>19450103
Lectured before Formosan trainees 10-12: from Sino-Japanese war to Washington conference. Took lunch with Wang Shih-chieh 【王世杰] and had conference on questions of the week in preparation for press conference. Back in the office at 2. Handed some business to Shih Chi-nan 【施其南]. At 3, went to Holly’s 【董顯光] office, for the press conference. Questions were mostly about the constitutional convention: whether free electioneering will be allowed to candidates of all parties, whether new elections will be held, etc. Back at office at 4. Wrote a letter to Yafeng 【許亞芬]. At 5, Nichols of American Red Cross and Calvin【1】, his successor, called. Dinner with Francis Pan 【潘光迥]. Bridge. Met there Lennox【2】 of Jardine Matheson & Co. 【怡和洋行]. Francis is much interested in dehydration and has produced a regulation package for the army. A certain Kuo 【郭彝民], formerly Consul-General in Formosa, called. Had an interesting talk on the people, the resources, and Japanese administrative methods in Formosa. Sent two dispatches about CNRRA 【行政院善後救濟總署]: one to Supreme National Defense Council 【國防最高委員會] and one to Legislative Yuan: suggesting certain amendments in statute and urging quick action. These official delays and hesitations are certainly tiresome.
