蒋廷黻日记>19441123
Partial sunshine. Went through mail packet from the U.S.A., including a speech by Kerner on Soviet Russia and a report of UNRRA 【聯合國善後救濟總署] Welfare Division on China’s welfare program. The report was very favorable, going so far as to say, China’s estimates were too modest. Told secretary to wire Liu Chieh 【劉鍇] on a number of points in connection with UNRRA. After lunch, talked with Fu 【傅斯年] about the aid to colleges and universities: my idea being to give Chu’s 【朱家驊] assumption of office some boost. At 2 p.m., went to League of Nations Union Annual Meeting, where Wang Shih-chieh 【王世杰], C. T. Wang 【王正廷], and myself made speeches. At 4:30, attended Gissimo’s 【蔣中正] tea reception to Americans: this being Thanksgiving Day. At 6:15, air alarm, which cancels my evening lecture before the Cultural Mission. During the alarm period, sat in car and talked with X about Sheng Shih-tsai’s 【盛世才] rule over Sinkiang: a story as bleak as any in the annals of human crime. Most likely, Sinkiang will be lost.
