Hot. Last night I dreamed that from a window I saw streams of bright light in the distance. Wondered what they could be. Sze Pao 【蔣居仁] suggested that they might be the dragon-play. I could not understand how a dragon-play could be so bright, but I thought it might be because electric lights had been put in the dragon. Sze Pao and I went out to see. Streets were crowded. People were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the dragon. Spotting a window sill on which Sze Pao might stand, I proceeded to pull him up, but he being so heavy, so surprisingly heavy, I failed to lift him up high enough and my effort made me wake up.
I wonder if this dream betokens something bad.
Took lunch with Milo Perkins in the Metropolitan Club, Gladieux being present. We talked about the sphere of state enterprise in China, the future of world cartels, etc. He refuses to forsake for a moment his empiricism.
Went to return the call of V. K. W. Koo 【顧維鈞], found him out.
Could not get a haircut anywhere, this being Labor Day.
Allies took Brussels and Antwerp.
Wrote a letter to Mother Lingle.【1】

【1】應為蔣廷黻在湖南湘潭長老教會學校益智中學的英文老師林格爾夫人（Jean Lingle, 1868-1953），1889年與一位長老會牧師結婚後到山東。
先生染病過世後，1895年改嫁另一位長老會牧師林格爾（William Hill Lingle），兩人轉往廣東，後來又轉往湖南，她也在長老教會辦的女校福湘女中教書。
1911年辛亥革命後社會騷動不安，原擬關閉學校暫時返美，並同意讓蔣廷黻跟隨至美國讀書。
抵上海後改變心意返回湖南繼續辦校，因蔣廷黻仍執意赴美，於是助其借款並委託青年會幹事協助照顧，讓他搭上前往美國舊金山的輪船。
林格爾夫婦在1932年搬到美國加州帕薩迪納，育有兩女（Dorothea Lingle Brannon 及 Margaret Lingle Amos）。
