Good Evening. This is William L. Shirer. I'm speaking to you from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany

It's a curious place to be speaking from, really.

Im sitting in the press coop in the hockey-stadium, because this is the only place where i could find a microphone

It's almost 1 a.m., everyone 's gone home, and the stadium is dark.

but three hours ago it was a verylively place with several thousand fans applauding a hockey game between Germany and Yugoslavia and applauding even more some very graceful figure-skaters assembled here from various countries in Central Europe

I feel almost sentimental being here tonight, because just exactly four years ago, i sat on this same bench, surrounded by paul Gallico, westbrook Pegler, and a host of other american writers. at that time -and it seems a long time ago -there was peace and we sat here watching the athletes of the world perform in the winter Olympic Games.

The idea seemed all right to us then -the idea of keeping the nations competing peacefully in sports.

The Winter Olympics were to be held here again this year, and i had planned to come down. And i have-only it's different than we expected when we made our first plans last summer.

What's going on here in place of the olympics is a series of winter games but only a handful of nations are represented -Italy, Yugoslavia, Romania, hungary, Slovakia, the Protectorate and germany

And Im here because practically all of the foreign correspondents were transported down here yesterday, and our press conferences have taken place here today instead ofin Berlin.

Actually, I must say there was very little news in our press conference here tonight, so I telephoned to berlin for more news, but berlin didnt have any either.

A lull seems to have set in here after Hitlers speech, and when it is broken, it will probably be only by the beginning of the serious prosecution of this war in the west

The German press itself is still talking about the Hitler speech.

It records today that, as it puts it, the world has understood Hitler and it says the foreign countries were deeply impressed by the Fuhrer's words, especially his attack on france, his assurance of Germany's huge armaments and the fact that two big powers Russia and italy remain germany' s friends

There is practically no reaction here to Mr. Chamberlains speech little about it is published; and editorially and editorially

The German Foreign Office let it be known that it is following closely the proceedings of the Balkan conference which opens in Belgrade tomorrow, but actually the germans say they do not expect any unpleasant-for them -fireworks there

It's announced that the one-mark nickel pieces are to be withdrawn from circulation by March 1. They' re already being replaced by paper notes. The 5o pfennig pieces of nickel already have given away to new pieces made of aluminum

And it's also announced that henceforth babies must have clothing ration cards. Heretofore they were exempt and could have as many clothes as their parents could buy

Berlin and most of Germany is still suffering from the intense cold made worse by the coal shortage,

but here in the Alps - strangepenough - it's quite warm.

i return you now from Garmisch to CBS in New York

A few days later Shirerjoined his family in geneva for a couple of weeks. While there he wrote to Ed klauber the top cbs newsman in New york

A line to thank you for the christmas bonus and the raise

i didnt want to write about them from berlin. because the germans ever on the watch-out for a spare dollar of foreign exchange, would have devised some way of relieving me of both of them, as soon as they had read my letter

I note that you, White and Murrow, still think i am doing a useful job in Berlin, though personally i sometimes doubt it.

To be sure, I gather our censorship is not quite as fantastic as the French; still, it is bad enough.

And we have not only political and militar censorship of the radio script, but, what is often worse, censorship of news at its source

We are not only rarely told anything truthful but are prevented from getting news ourselves.

For instance, we cannot go to Poland to check up on the reports we get from there of German sadism, murder, repression.

we indeed have done a bad job on both Poland and czechoslovakia.

Organized german murder in both is one of the most disgusting chapters in this war so far

It's interesting that the people where i am are also getting ver touchy about the Leader.

When i left a fortnight ago, otto tolischus Lof The New York Times, was in hot water for having written almosta banal sentence about people shivering and hungering while hitler spoke at the sportpalast

On the whole, i think that if the german offensive develops in the next few weeks, we will be allowed to say very little, if anything If it doesnt develop, censorship will tighten more gradually,

but it wil not be long before Berlin will put a“Verbot” on anything “ likely to cause a bad impression in america-an excuse which has been increasingly used for slashing my scripts by the Propaganda Ministry lately
