取得格兰维尔教授之信，晚间至李先生处，请其过目。李先生允亦代为修书致梅校长请求。格兰维尔教授之信如下：

Dear Sir，

Mr. N. Shiah（Shiah Nae），at present a post-graduate student in the department，has asked me to write to you in support of his request for the continuation of his scholarship.

Mr. Shiah has been working at Egyptology under my supervision since last October. His work is good. He is extremely industrous，conscientious and accurate，and so far as I can judge at present，shows an interest in all sides of his subject.

When he has taken a qualifying examination he will be working almost entirely on a thesis of archaeological character. The subject for this has not yet been decided as I wish to see more of his archaeological work first. I understand from Mr. Shiah that he is anxious to get some experience in the field while he is working at Egyptology and I hope to be able to arrange this for him during next autumn or this following spring. This should materially improve the value of his Egyptological work as well as increase his general archaeological experience and training. The present course will necessitate his remaining here until the summer of 1938 at least，and I therefore strongly endorse his request to you to continue his scholarship up to that period.

自去年10月以来，夏鼐先生一直在我的指导下攻读埃及学。他干得很好。极其勤奋、认真、严谨；就我现在看来，他对他的课程表现出全面的兴趣。

在通过资格考试后，他将以几乎全部精力撰写考古学性质的论文。论文题目尚未决定，因为我想先多了解一下他的考古工作。我知道夏鼐先生想在攻读埃及学的同时尽快取得田野工作的经验，我希望能在今秋或明春作此安排。这将大大提高他攻读埃及学的进益，增加其一般考古学的经验和训练。目前的课程很需要他留下来，至少留到1938年夏天。所以我非常赞同他的要求，请您将奖学金延至上述年限。
