Beautiful day. Golf practice at Green Briar Range. The fellow in front of me drove 250 yards or more, while I reached only 200. Individuals do differ.
Took 2 p.m. shuttle plane for New York. Chow Shu-kai 【周書楷] and Hsueh Yu-chi 【薛毓麒] met me at the airport. We rode together to the delegation office, in order to talk about the problem of getting the General Assembly to do something for the refugees. It is a good occasion to get the world to know the misery of the people on the mainland, but the U.N. will not be able to get the funds for relief.
At 4, entered the rotunda of the Seth Low Library, which was the general reading room, now turned into a convocation hall. On the occasion of opening new quarters for Asian Studies, Columbia conferred an honorary degree on Prof. Tsunoda 【角田柳作],【1】 for many years professor of Japanese. Goodrich 【傅路德] gave a good sketch of the development of Chinese and Japanese studies in Columbia. When the convocation was over, we went into Kent Hall, turned into the home of Asian studies. In my day, Kent housed the Law School and the graduate department of History, Economics, Political Science, Public Law, and Sociology.
At 7, banquet in Faculty Club. I spoke for 5 minutes. Back on 10 p.m. plane.
