Staff meeting. Discussed Miss China and the beauty contests. Peng 【彭啟平], in charge, was much opposed. He said beauty contest was unseemly: he was reflecting the views of the old generation. He also said that Miss China always expected the Chinese communities in the U.S.A. to contribute to their expenses and education, and was often condescending to the Chinatown people. As to this point, he was right. I suggested that some journalist be asked to write articles on the subject.
Legislator Fan 范【苑聲]【1】 and his son and daughter-in-law came to lunch. He told me that Chen Cheng 【陳誠], in pressing for special defense taxes in the Legislature, pledged to counter-attack within one year. I told him that the American people were strongly against communism, as strongly against war. Unless the situation on the mainland gets worse, the U.S.A. would be against our action. He thought Shen Chang-huan 【沈昌煥] too weak to remain Foreign Minister long, that George Yeh 【葉公超] would be better. George, he thought, was smart but flamboyant.
