Another chat with Dr. Chen Chung-hsiu 【陳仲秀], on the novel by S. T. Tung 【董時進], for the light it throws on the impact of communism on the farmers. S. T. was engaged in fruit-growing in Chungking; before the war, he studied agricultural economics. I pointed out to Dr. Chen that the novel’s description of grain storage in a temple and the waste through pests and spoliation (hole in roof) were highly important.
Talk with Dr. Wei 【魏學仁] on personnel.
Lunch with P. W. Kuo 【郭秉文], T. Y. Lee 【李德燏], and Paul Meng 【孟治], to wind up the Committee on Students: the fund, about $7,000, was divided among the Sino-American Cultural Society of Washington and China Institute 【華美協進社] of New York.
Went to see steam SS Ru Yung 【如雲輪] docked in Jersey City. A freighter of 12,000 tons, with limited passenger accommodation, plying between Kelung and New York, via Panama Canal. Built in Japan, owned by Mr. Tung 【董浩雲].
