蒋廷黻日记>19620201

Called on Congressman Clement Zablocki,【1】 Chairman of Far East Sub-committee of House Foreign Affairs Committee. He said he had received an English translation of an editorial in Central Daily News in reply to an editorial in New York Times of Dec. 29th, and would read it into the Congressional Record.
Called on Ambassador Alejos【2】 of Guatemala. He thought that some of the states who abstained on resolution to exclude Castro at Punta del Este did so not so much out of disagreement as out of fear of domestic troubles.
Heisbourg of Luxembourg returned my call. We chatted about Western Europe as an area where states big and small co-existed in a sense of security.
Dinner with Harriman: Senator Jackson,【3】 Graham of Washington Post, Walter Lippmann, Asakai 【朝海浩一郎] of Japan, and Arthayukti of Thailand were the other guests. Lippmann thought Kennedy should have discussed Castro as unimportant and that the conference at Punta del Este should not have been held. Jackson thought conference was ill-prepared. Talk got on to the feud between Truman and Eisenhower. The latter in a speech in Chicago in 1952 stated Marshall was the front for traitors: Truman never forgave Ike for that.
