At 10:15 a.m., called on Asakai 【朝海浩一郎] of Japan. He remarked that a change of China’s representative in the U.N. might give the U.S.S.R. a chance to challenge the credentials. I explained the situation in Security Council where such a challenge might develop.
At 11:30, called on Thor Thors of Iceland. He is credited also to Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, and Canada.
At 3:30, called on Visutr Arthayukti【1】 of Thailand. We chatted about the situation in Laos. He and his government are skeptical about the neutralization of Laos, for fear that it might pave the way for communist take-over.
At 4:30, with Hilda 【沈恩欽], called on Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hummel【恆慕義].【2】 They were in Shansi as missionaries for 10 years, living in Fenyang 【汾陽], amidst monuments of antiquity.
