Delegation meeting. I tried to pin the discussion to one question: should China withdraw from the U.N. if the 2-China formula should be adopted and the Reds don’t come in? Hsueh Yu-chi 【薛毓麒], C. M. Chang 【張純明], N. S. Cheng 【鄭寶南], Wei Hsueh-jen 【魏學仁] answered no; Kiang 【江季平], a qualified no; Feng 【馮今白] and Chou 【周謙冲] on the fence. Feng inclining to no, Chou to yes. Mine was a categorical no. I said that I knew that yes would be applauded, no abused as treason or cowardice. For my personal reputation, I should pack up my baggage and leave the U.N. as soon as the vote for 2-China is announced. But for the future of the country, I should stay.
George Yeh 【葉公超] came from Washington to spend the evening with me. He told me how Mansfield almost pulled one over on Dirksen. George, through Lucas Scott 【Scott Lucas?],【1】 set Dirksen right again. Mansfield’s formula was: the U.S.A. should stand firm for
a seat in the U.N. for
the government and people of Formosa. The underlined parts betray Mansfield’s innermost thoughts.
