蒋廷黻日记>19590303

Nice day.
N. S. Cheng 【鄭寶南] returned from attending conferences in Addis Ababa, London, and Geneva.
Hollington K. Tong 【董顯光] came for a courtesy call. Told him that if C. 【蔣中正] should seek a third term, international reaction would be very unfavorable; that in order to increase the pay of soldiers and civil servants and teachers, the army should be reduced, by lowering the recruitment figure. He said he agreed, and added that if Chen Cheng 【陳誠] should become President, “You could be Prime Minister.” I better be careful, otherwise people might think that my advocacy of these things was only a lust for the premiership.
Attended a luncheon by Delgado【1】 in honor of Miss Helena Zimenz (?)【Helena Z. Benitez],【2】 president of the University for Women, leader of a group of folk dancers, president of women’s clubs in the Philippines.
Finished my inoculations.
Practiced golf at the Saddle River range.
