Staff need a 50% increase in salary before they reach freedom from worry about food, clothing, etc. Hard to improve quality of teaching. Present staff mediocre; impossible to dismiss large numbers. His medical faculty had been greatly improved, so facilities for teaching medicine.
Martin Wong 【王蓬] came to chat. He thought O. K. Yui 【俞鴻鈞] more understanding than Chen Cheng 【陳誠] but less influential and weaker. He felt George Yeh 【葉公超] the best man for the job.
Dinner with Fund for Asia, Michener and Paul Hoffman expressed hope for “democratic Asia” and pleaded for voluntary help. Their “democratic Asia” naturally did not include Nationalist China. M. singled out Indonesia for praise. Superficial: more U.S. dollars will go down the drain.
